Carpets and durries form an integral part of the art and craft of Gujarat. Crafts form a way of life that converts simple articles of day to day uses into a thing of beauty. They alter the looks of your household and thereby gives a break to the monotony of life. You will be inspired when you take a glance of the traditional art and craft of a state like Gujarat which is known for its amazing use of colors in any form of art including the textiles.
Carpets and durries in Gujarat are woven on primitive pitlooms in the interior villages of Kutch. Wankars extraordinarily weave designs with their own hands whereas the machine is run by foot pedals. In this way, they give birth to the gorgeous patterns and the magnificent colors in various combinations.
The weavers generally make carpets and durries from wool, goat hair as well as cotton. Colorful quilts are also woven traditionally on pitlooms, shuttle looms and other handlooms.
Handloom weaving including that of the carpets and durries form one of the principal occupations especially in the villages which lie on the Ahmedabad - Bhavnagar highway.
The traditional Gujarati's have defended their rich cultural heritage for ages. The art and craft of the region is an evidence to the fact. The Gujaratis have given the textiles a new height altogether. The variety in textiles lies in the differences of raw materials, the combinations of yarns and in the effective use of traditional techniques. You will find design variations used by different communities, castes and regions of the state.
